The ESPN app has been updated to include support for Apple’s SharePlay feature, which allows you to view films with family and friends via FaceTime. The functionality is especially well suited for live sports, which the ESPN app provides a great amount of (due to built-in access to Disney’s ESPN Plus streaming service).
Users will be able to watch ESPN Plus streams, as well as original ESPN video content in the app and « TV Everywhere » content in the app that users have authorized with an additional login, once the app has been updated. As with other SharePlay material, everyone participating in a shared stream must have access to the service in question — thus if you’re the only one with an ESPN Plus account, you won’t be able to watch the game with your friends via SharePlay.
At the moment, only the iOS and iPad versions of the ESPN app allow SharePlay, but the firm promises that Apple TV users will receive a similar upgrade later this month.
The business added support for Disney Plus in December, shortly after the service debuted, compared to the roughly five months it took for ESPN. Meanwhile, Hulu, Disney’s third major streaming service, still does not support SharePlay.
