Razor, the firm that helped start the scooter craze more than two decades ago, has introduced new electric versions of its iconic kick scooter models. And this time, they’re made for grown-ups.

Razor will launch a Kickstarter campaign for the new scooters, with the first units expected to ship in August 2022. The scooters, which are based on the company’s renowned kick scooters that were initially designed for children, will be available in five distinct colors: orange, blue, red, pink, and black. These scooters will go a little faster than those that rely simply on leg muscles, thanks to powerful 350W engines.

With their marketing pitch for these new, powered scooters, Razor hopes to tap into Gen Z’s nostalgia for simpler times in their childhood. « The Razor Icon allows adult fans to rediscover all of the joys of the early 2000s, but with the ability to cruise around the neighborhood in a grown-up style and feel, » the business adds.

There appears to be an arms race going on to release the world’s quickest, toughest, and most powerful e-scooter. Every week, I hear pitches for scooters with top speeds of 30, 40, and even 50 mph, as well as giant battery packs and multiple engines. However, there is a cost. They are obviously risky to ride. However, many of these high-performance two-wheelers cost far more than $1,000. That’s more than most people are likely to be willing to pay for an electric scooter.

Razor is engaged in a different game. Razor has been increasing its reach into the adult market after becoming identified with kid scooters, most notably with the debut of three new models: the EcoSmart SUP, E300 HD, and C25. With a maximum load of 220 pounds, each had a top speed of only 15.5 mph.

With a top speed of 18 mph and a stated range of 18 miles on a single charge, the new Razor Icon is one of the company’s most powerful models. Razor intends to sell these e-scooters for « under $1,000. »
